Since Lucas wanted to talk marriage in front of both families, Lilly figured this was the perfect moment to make her feelings clear. She wasn’t going to marry him. Simple as that.
Mrs. Matthis looked uneasy, guilt flickering in her eyes. She glanced at her son. “Lucas, this…”
Lucas didn’t even flinch. He stared right at Lilly, totally expecting her reaction. “Lilly, I know I made mistakes before. I was young and stupid, and I didn’t see what was right in front of me. But I get it now. I’ve loved you for a long time, even if I didn’t realize it. Please, just give me another chance. I swear I’ll treat you right this time.”
Lilly couldn’t help but roll her eyes. His promise isn’t worth anything. Nobody has to stand around waiting for someone who couldn’t make up their mind. When it’s over, it’s over.
“Lucas, we…”
Before she could finish, May’s phone went off. She glanced at the screen. “Lilly, it’s your dad.”
Mr. Lynch had been extra busy lately. He was well-respected, a true lover of the arts, but the Lynch family business was huge, and he had to run it. Even though business wasn’t his thing, it was his job.
He and May only had Lilly, and Lilly was a fashion designer, not interested in the family company at all.
“Mom, you should answer it,” Lilly said quickly.
“Okay.”
May answered, but whatever she heard made her jump to her feet. “What did you say?”
Lilly shot up too. “Mom, what happened?”
“Lilly, your dad’s in the hospital.”
The words knocked the breath out of Lilly. “How? Why is he in the hospital? We need to go. Now.”
May nodded, barely holding it together. She turned to Mrs. Matthis. “Sorry, but we have to leave.”
Mrs. Matthis nodded. “Yes, of course.”
Lilly followed her mom out, but Lucas called after her. “Lilly.”
