Lilly couldn’t stand Lucas. She’d just managed to shake him off tonight, and now he wanted both families to sit down together. The nerve.
“Mom, I don’t want to see him. Sure, our families had an agreement, but Lucas cheated on me with Sarah. He broke things off himself. That engagement is over. I’m not marrying him.”
Her mom gave her a reassuring look. “Lilly, your dad and I are on your side, always. You deserve someone with real character. We haven’t forgotten how Lucas used you to get close to our family, even though he never really liked you. But the Matthis family has been rising fast these past few years, and our families are so closely tied it’s not easy to untangle things. Mrs. Matthis called earlier and was practically begging us to meet. It felt wrong to say no. Lilly, how about we just meet them tomorrow? We can clear things up, officially end things, and move on.”
As the Lynch family heiress, Lilly knew what came with the title. Privilege, sure, but also a responsibility not to let things get ugly between the families.
She nodded. “Fine. Tomorrow, I’ll talk to Lucas and set things straight.”
“Good.”
…
The next day, after dropping Victoria at the research institute, Lilly headed home, where May was waiting to take her to a restaurant called Golden Spoon.
This was the place both families picked for the meeting.
Lilly and May stepped into the private dining room. Mrs. Matthis and Lucas were already there.
Mrs. Matthis stood up with a big, friendly smile. “Mrs. Lynch. Lilly. Hello.”
