“A few days ago, we started a huge project with an international company. Everything was just getting underway when a worker had a terrible fall and ended up in the hospital. He hurt his leg so badly he can barely walk. I sent people to visit him and offer compensation, but his family wouldn’t even let them in. Then the worker went public with the story, and now our reputation has taken a serious hit. Company stocks have dropped like crazy, and that international partner is already talking about ending the partnership. If they pull out, all our money will be tied up. Once our cash flow dries up, we could go bankrupt.”
Lilly’s hands went cold. She never imagined the Lynch family was already on the brink of disaster.
“I’ve tried visiting that worker so many times. I told him we’d agree to any condition he wanted, but I couldn’t even get in the door. Today, his six sons saw me and started a fight. The oldest one just picked up a brick and hit me right on the head.”
May was livid. “How can they be so unreasonable? Our construction site follows every safety rule, and all the workers have insurance. Now, after this accident, they won’t even sit down to talk. Instead, they’re making a scene, ruining our reputation, and even hurting you. I think we’re dealing with real troublemakers.”
Mr. Lynch nodded. “Yes, the whole family looks like gangsters. Tattoos everywhere.”
Lilly’s heart sank. There was no way this was just a random accident. Someone had to be setting her father and the Lynch family up.
This disaster hit right as they were working with this multinational company, and now they were dealing with a family that’s acting like criminals. None of this could be a coincidence. Someone was behind it all.
“Dad, I think someone’s pulling strings in the background,” Lilly said quietly, letting her suspicion out.
Mr. Lynch nodded. “Lilly, I was thinking the same thing. Someone’s coming after the Lynch family, and they’re not holding back.”
May paused. “But who could it be? No one in the capital dares to mess with our family. Who has the guts to go this far? And this kind of setup isn’t something just anyone could pull off.”
She was right. Only a handful of people in the city could pull strings like this. Lilly already had a name in mind.
“Dad, Mom, I need to go out for a bit.”
