“Are you already closed?” David’s voice was tight with worry. “My wife and I were supposed to get our marriage license today.”
The woman behind the counter looked up, recognition flashing in her eyes. “We closed a while ago. Was your wife a really pretty girl? Tall and young?”
David nodded, desperate. “Yes, that’s her. She’s my wife.”
She shook her head, a little disapproving. “I have to say, she waited here for you the whole day. Getting married is a big deal. How could you stand her up like that?”
Wait. Ella waited for him all day?
David’s heart sank. “Something came up. I was delayed,” he blurted out.
“She left after we closed. If you want to find her, you’ll have to do it yourself,” the clerk replied.
“Thank you,” David said, barely getting the words out before he rushed outside. He jumped back into his car and grabbed his phone. It was overflowing with missed calls, all from Ella. She’d called again and again.
He felt sick. How could he have let her wait all day? How could he have missed something this important? How could he have ignored her calls?
He called her right away. The phone rang and rang, but nobody picked up.
“Ella, please answer. Please,” he pleaded, but only silence answered him.
She wasn’t picking up. The realization hit him like a punch to the gut. He’d finally gotten this chance with her, and he’d blown it.
David was about to call again, but a sudden, sharp pain slammed into his head, making him gasp. It was that same stabbing headache, worse than ever.
That’s when Jessa showed up, sliding into his line of vision by the car. “David.”
He looked at her, barely holding it together. “Why are you here?”
