Ella got to her feet. She’d been waiting for David at the marriage registry all day. People had come and gone, but not once did she see him.

She turned to the clerk and asked, “Excuse me, can I try calling him one more time?”

The clerk gave her a gentle nod. “You’ve waited here all day, haven’t you? We’ll wait with you a little longer. If he really wants to marry you, he’ll show up. If not, maybe it’s time to stop waiting.”

Ella’s eyelashes trembled as she nodded. “Okay.”

She pulled out her phone and dialed David’s number.

The ringtone played, echoing in her ear, but there was no answer. Soon enough, the automated voice came on. “Sorry, the number you dialed can’t be reached right now. Please try again later.”

Still no answer from David.

The clerk looked at her, concern in her eyes. “He still hasn’t come?”

Ella shook her head. “No.”

Just then, another staff member came over. “Miss, we’re closing up for the day. We have to lock the doors.”

Ella nodded, voice soft. “Alright, thank you for waiting with me. I’ll head out now.”

She walked out of the registry office.

As she stepped outside, she overheard the two clerks chatting quietly behind her. “That poor girl waited all day. Honestly, the moment her fiancé was late, I knew he wasn’t coming. Who shows up late to get a marriage license?”

“I know, right? If he really cared about her, there’s no way he wouldn’t make it. Maybe she should think twice about marrying someone like that.”

“She’s so pretty, too. He really doesn’t know how lucky he is.”

Their words lingered in the cold air, following Ella out into the evening.

She stood on the sidewalk as a chilly wind brushed her cheeks, making her shiver. Just when she was ready to let go of the past and start over with David, he had managed to douse all her hope with cold reality, leaving her standing there alone.
