Ella was waiting when her phone started ringing. It was Lilly calling.

She picked up, and Lilly’s voice bubbled with excitement. “Ella, you’re still in the Capital, right? Let’s meet up, I miss you!”

“Lilly, I can’t today. I’m at the marriage office,” Ella said.

Lilly paused, then nearly shouted, “The marriage office?”

Ella nodded even though Lilly couldn’t see her. “Yeah. David and I are getting remarried. We’re here for the license.”

There was a beat of stunned silence. Then Lilly’s excitement burst through the line. “Oh my god, Ella! You’re getting back together with David nd you didn’t tell me? This is amazing. I always knew you two would end up together.”

Ella couldn’t help but smile. “We’ll catch up soon, okay?”

She ended the call just as a staff member called out, “Number 18! Number 18, please come forward.”

Ella glanced at the little ticket in her hand. Eighteen. Their number.

She looked at the entrance. Outside, the hallway was empty. David’s tall, familiar figure was nowhere to be seen.

He said he was on his way... so where was he?

“Number 18! Is number 18 here?”

Ella hurried over. “Hi, that’s me.”

The clerk glanced behind her. “Are you alone? Where’s your husband?”

“Sorry, he’s running late. Maybe the next couple can go first?”

The clerk sighed. “Getting married is a big deal. How can he be late for this?”

Ella’s hands trembled a little. She had no idea why David wasn’t here yet.
