Ella and Lilly met up at a cozy restaurant, settling into a private room away from the crowd. Lilly handed the menu over to Ella with a warm smile. “You must be starving after waiting all day at the registry office. Go ahead and order whatever you want.”
Ella didn’t hesitate. She flipped through the menu and picked out a few dishes she liked.
Lilly leaned in, her voice low. “So, what happened today? Why didn’t David show up?”
Ella shook her head, her expression weary. “I have no idea. I called him, but he never picked up.”
Lilly slapped her hand on the table, frustration clear in her eyes. “Unbelievable. He stood you up? I’m calling him right now to see what’s going on.”
She pulled out her phone and dialed David’s number. The ringtone played over and over, but there was no answer.
Lilly sighed, clearly annoyed. “Why isn’t he answering? What could he possibly be doing today?”
Just then, the waiter arrived with their food. Ella quietly picked up her utensils and started eating, lost in her thoughts.
Lilly reached over, her tone gentle. “Don’t worry, Ella. I promise I’ll get David to explain himself.”
Ella didn’t really know what to think anymore. David wanted to get married, but he was also the one who didn’t show up. Even if he was busy, he could’ve at least answered her call or sent a message.
Lilly watched her for a moment. “I’m not trying to make excuses for him, but this really isn’t like David. Do you think something might have happened to him?”
Ella paused, her fork halfway to her mouth. Could something have happened to David? All day she’d been disappointed and upset, but now that she thought about it, the whole situation felt off. David wasn’t the kind of person to just disappear. Even if he’d changed his mind about the wedding, he would’ve told her in person. This just wasn’t like him at all.
