David didn’t say another word. He just turned and walked away.
Joanna reached out, her voice trembling a little. “Mr. Harmon…”
Before she could say more, Moss called after him. “David!”
David stopped and glanced back. “Do you need something else?”
Moss’s expression was serious. “Since you don’t want to marry my daughter, I won’t force you. But when the Harmon and Wade families agreed to this engagement, there was a written contract. Bring it here. Let’s tear it up. Once that’s done, the engagement will officially end.”
David nodded. “Alright.” He left without looking back.
Jessa felt her knees go weak. “David!” she cried, her voice breaking. She turned to her parents, desperate. “Mom, Dad, what am I supposed to do now? David doesn’t want me anymore!”
Joanna looked at Moss, confused and worried. “What’s happening? Doesn’t he like Jessa?”
Moss shook his head. “No. David doesn’t love our daughter.”
Joanna frowned. “If he doesn’t love Jessa, then who does he love? He looked like he already had someone in mind.”
Jessa jumped in, her voice sharp. “Mom, you don’t know. The person David loves is Ella!”
Joanna blinked, stunned. David was into Ella?
She stood frozen for a moment.
Moss confirmed it. “Yes, David has feelings for Ella. The two of them got close back in Rockford Bay.”
Joanna hadn’t expected this, but thinking about Ella, who was smart, beautiful, and kind, it wasn’t hard to see why David would fall for her. It was a shock, but it also made sense.
