David paused for a moment, guilt twisting in his chest. However, he hadn’t come here to witness anyone else’s perfect love story.
Moss already had his happy ending, but David and Ella had been apart for three years now. He hadn’t even managed to slept with her.
He took a breath. “I’m here today because I need to talk to you.”
“David, what brings you here?” Joanna asked, just as Jessa came out of her room, her footsteps quick in the hallway. She’d heard David’s voice and rushed out, her eyes lighting up when she saw him.
“David, this is perfect timing. My mom’s back, my dad’s here, we’re all together. Let’s finally set a date for the wedding, okay? When are you going to marry me?” Jessa said, looping her arm through his with a bright smile.
Joanna watched David with a gentle seriousness. “Mr. Harmon, you and Jessa have been promised to each other since you were kids. You’re both old enough now, and it’s time to settle down. Tomorrow, your mom and I can look at the calendar and pick a good day to start planning the wedding.”
Moss watched David in silence, his expression unreadable.
David’s eyes turned cold as he looked at Jessa. “Let go!”
The words were sharp, cutting right through the happy moment. Jessa froze.
David pulled his arm away from her and his voice was like ice. “I don’t want you to touch me again.”
Jessa just stared at him, stunned, words caught in her throat.
Joanna frowned, confused by his attitude. “Mr. Harmon, why are you treating Jessa like this?”
David faced them both. “Uncle Moss, Mrs. Wade, I came here today to officially call off the engagement.”
The room went silent.
Joanna blinked, not sure she’d heard him right. “Mr. Harmon, you want to break off the engagement with Jessa?”
