He wanted nothing more than to wrap Ella and Lola in his arms and never let go. Just the idea that Lola might actually be his daughter set his heart racing. He could barely contain the excitement buzzing through him.
David walked over with a smile. "Lola."
She turned at the sound of his voice, her eyes lighting up. She ran straight into his arms. "Hi!"
David planted a kiss on her cheek. "Come here, let me give you a big hug."
With Lola nestled in his strong arms, David gently plucked a strand of her hair without her noticing.
Lola was still grinning when Ella walked back in. "Lola."
Lola’s face brightened even more. "Mommy, you’re home!"
Ella smiled. "Lola, what have you been up to while I was gone?"
Mrs. Harmon quickly held up a piece of paper. "Ella, look at what Lola drew. She said she wants David to be her daddy, and she wants the three of you to always be together."
Ella stared at the drawing, a little stunned, then glanced up at David.
He gave a sly smile. "Lola, I’d love to be your daddy, but you’d have to ask your mommy if she’s okay with that. What do you think, Ella?"
Lola looked up at her mom with big hopeful eyes. "Mommy, can he be my daddy? Please?"
Ella hesitated, her voice gentle. "Lola, things between grown-ups are a little complicated. Let’s talk about this another time, alright?"
"But…"
Mrs. Harmon stepped in with a warm smile. "Let’s eat first. Ella, why don’t you wash your hands and then come to the table?"
"Okay," Ella agreed, heading off to the bathroom.
Mrs. Harmon scooped Lola out of David’s arms and looked him right in the eye. "Looks like you’ve got your work cut out for you if you want to win her back. Good luck."
David just glanced down at the strand of hair in his hand. If Lola really was his daughter, then maybe Ella would be his too.
