Louise smiled. “Jessa, I’m really happy for you and your mom. You two are so close.”
Jessa rolled her eyes. “Louise, you really know how to put on a show.”
She glanced around, suddenly realizing something. “Where’s my dad?”
Louise didn’t look at her. She took her time sitting down at the dining table, picking up her fork and knife with graceful ease before starting to eat breakfast. “Oh, Moss left early this morning.”
Jessa felt a prickle of unease. Something about Louise was off. Louise was already eating at the table before Jessa had even sat down. The Louise she remembered always tried so hard to please her, never daring to do anything like this.
“Where did he go?”
Louise sipped her milk, her voice casual. “I’m not sure. But his private assistant came by at dawn. He was holding something that looked like a hospital report.”
A hospital report?
Jessa’s heart skipped a beat. She spoke up, her voice tight. “What kind of report? Dad never mentioned anything like that.”
Louise smiled, almost playfully. “I honestly don’t know the details. Let me think… Could it be a DNA test?”
A DNA test?
No way.
Jessa’s eyes went wide, her breath caught in her chest. “My dad did a DNA test? When did he do that?”
Louise set down her glass and looked at Jessa. “Why are you freaking out? Even if Moss did a DNA test, you don’t have anything to worry about. You’re his daughter, the real heiress. No matter how many times they test, the result won’t change.”
Jessa felt all the blood drain from her face. She never thought Moss would go behind her back and order a DNA test.
