Jessa didn’t bother with small talk. “Did you bring the one I asked for?”

Her eyes sparkled with satisfaction. Finally, she had Ella’s little brat right where she wanted her. As long as Lola was out of the picture, no one would ever find out the truth about her parentage. Then Jessa could finally relax.

One of the men led her to a small, dimly lit room. There was a tiny window in the door, and Jessa leaned in to peek through it. Inside, Mrs. Harmon sat on the floor with Lola in her arms. The two of them were curled up together in the corner, holding each other tight.

Jessa froze. She blinked, then looked again, hardly believing her eyes. Was that really Mrs. Harmon?

What on earth was happening? Why was Mrs. Harmon here?

She turned to the man beside her. “What is going on? Why is there someone else in there?”

“Ms. Wade, I was just about to tell you. When we went to grab the kid, we ran into this old lady. She tried to stop us, tried to save the child. We had no choice but to bring her with us.”

Jessa felt her heart drop into her stomach. She hadn’t planned for this. Of all people, how did they end up kidnapping Mrs. Harmon, her future mother-in-law?
