Ella just stared at David, completely stunned. She honestly couldn’t believe what she’d just heard. Was he really saying he wanted to be the other man?
David Harmon was the kind of guy who never struggled for female attention. He had status, looks, charm, everything. And yet, here he was, willing to toss all that aside and play the role of a homewrecker?
Wyatt, listening on the other end of the call, sounded just as shocked. For a moment, he was utterly silent.
“Wyatt, I have to go. I’ll talk to you later,” David said, cutting the call without waiting for a reply.
He turned to Ella, who could only gape at him in disbelief. David flashed her a crooked smile. “Why are you looking at me like that?”
Ella’s eyelashes fluttered as she tried to find her voice. “Mr. Harmon, you really didn’t have to say that to Wyatt. People are going to get the wrong idea.”
David leaned in and gently pinched her chin between his fingers. “Every word I said was true. Why shouldn’t I say it? Or are you worried it’s going to get you in trouble, that you’ll have a hard time explaining things to Wyatt when you get back?”
Ella let out a shaky breath. “Honestly? Both.”
David grinned. “There’s a way to fix both problems at once.”
She arched a brow, unsure if she wanted to know the answer. “What way?”
“Divorce Wyatt. Marry me.”
Ella stared at him, momentarily speechless. When she finally spoke, her voice was soft but steady. “Mr. Harmon, you should be thinking about your situation with Jessa. You are supposed to get married. That’s not something you can just ignore.”
David opened his mouth to protest. “I—”
She cut him off, her tone gentle but firm. “Mr. Harmon, Lola and your mom are still missing. I know you’ve sent people out to look for them, but right now, I don’t want to talk about anything else. I just want them to come home safe. Can we focus on that?”
He nodded, his expression softening. “Alright. When Lola and my mom are back, we’ll talk.”
