David pushed back his chair and stood up. “Mom, I don’t see any reason to keep sitting here. I’m heading to the office.” He didn’t wait for a response. He just walked out.
“David? David!” Mrs. Harmon called after him, but he didn’t even look back.
Jessa watched him go, her eyes clouding over. For three years, she had run into wall after wall with David. The more unattainable he became, the more she wanted him. Now she was the richest heiress in the city. She could have anything she wanted, and she was determined to have him too.
She moved closer to Mrs. Harmon, putting on her sweetest, most concerned expression. “Mrs. Harmon, did you see that?”
Mrs. Harmon was fuming. “Jessa, all of this is David’s fault. Don’t worry. I’ll make sure he learns his lesson when we get home.”
“Please, don’t be too hard on him,” Jessa said gently. “It hurts me to see him upset or hurt.”
“Jessa, you’re too kind to him,” Mrs. Harmon sighed.
“It’s really not David’s fault,” Jessa continued, her voice soft and full of sympathy. “If anyone’s to blame, it’s Ella. She’s back in the Capital, stirring things up again. Everyone knows about the engagement between us, but right when David and I are supposed to get married, she comes back. She’s so calculating.”
Mrs. Harmon’s face tightened. “Ella really is up to no good.”
“It’s even worse than you think,” Jessa said, lowering her voice. “Three years ago, didn’t Ella get pregnant? Now she’s back with her daughter. The girl’s father is another man, but she keeps clinging to David, begging him to hold her. Like mother, like daughter. They just won’t let go of him.”
Mrs. Harmon’s eyes widened. “What? Are you serious? Ella’s daughter was asking David for hugs?”
“I saw it myself,” Jessa nodded.
Mrs. Harmon’s voice grew sharp. “Our Harmon family has always valued our pure and noble bloodline. I’ve been hoping you and David would get married soon and give me a strong, healthy grandson. Why would some child of Ella cling to David? What do they want, for him to be a stepfather? That will never happen.”
Jessa smiled to herself, lips curving with satisfaction. She knew she had planted a seed of resentment in Mrs. Harmon’s heart. Now, Mrs. Harmon would never accept Ella’s daughter.
This was just the beginning. Jessa would make sure Lola was out of the picture for good. Only then could her own secrets stay buried forever.
