“Ella, let me take you inside,” David offered, already reaching for her arm as they stood at the entrance to the Emerald Banquet.
Ella smiled, her lips just barely curving. “Thanks, Mr. Harmon, but I’ll be fine on my own.”
“On your own? Ella, come on. This place is packed with the city’s richest. How do you expect to get in?” Jessa couldn’t hide her skepticism, and Sarah just looked her up and down, clearly unconvinced. Even David seemed doubtful, though he was more than willing to bring her as his guest.
Ella calmly reached into her purse and pulled out an invitation. “Sorry to disappoint you, but I have my own invitation.”
Jessa and Sarah stared at her like she’d just pulled a rabbit out of her bag. “Wait, you actually got an invitation? Ella, don’t tell me you made it onto the Forbes list or something?”
Sarah shook her head. “That can’t be right. Ella, your name isn’t on the Forbes list. Hardly any women make it on there. The only female billionaire people are talking about tonight is Isabella. She’s the big mystery guest. Nobody’s mentioned you.”
Sarah had a point. Ella’s name wasn’t on any rich list.
Ella just gave a soft, almost amused smile. “So you’ve heard about Isabella coming tonight too?”
“Of course. She’s the top woman in pharmaceuticals,” Jessa jumped in, almost laughing. “And since you’re that famous Doctor E, you must know all about her. Let me guess, Ella, you work for her, right?”
Ella’s assistant, barely hiding her irritation, shot Jessa and Sarah a series of dramatic eye rolls. She opened her mouth to retort, but Ella stopped her with a quick glance.
There was no need to explain anything. Watching their faces later would be way more satisfying.
David stepped closer, lowering his voice. “Ella, Isabella really is attending tonight. Why not come in with me? There’s so much I want to talk to you about.”
