Her assistant leaned in. "Isabella, we should head inside now."

Ella gave David one last look from the balcony, then turned away. "Let's go," she said, leading her assistant toward the entrance.

They barely made it a few steps before she stopped in her tracks. Two women stood right in front of them. It was Jessa and Sarah.

David hadn’t managed to find Ella, but Jessa and Sarah sure had.

"Ella?" Both of them stared at her, unable to hide their shock.

Seeing them again after all these years, Ella just smiled, her lips curling with a hint of amusement. "Jessa. Sarah. Long time no see."

Jessa looked like she’d seen a ghost. Nobody expected Ella to show up in the Capital, let alone at the Emerald Banquet. "Ella, what are you doing here?"

Ella lifted an eyebrow. "Why wouldn’t I be?"

Sarah jumped in with a roll of her eyes. "How dare you show up at the Capital? You don’t belong here. Jessa’s the heiress now. This is her city."

Jessa gave Ella a smug look. "If you were coming to the Capital, you could have told me. I might’ve shown you around."

Ella shook her head, smiling politely. "No thank you. I’m just here for the Emerald Banquet."

Jessa’s eyes went wide. "You? At the Emerald Banquet? And who are you supposed to be, Dr. E?"

Sarah let out a sneer. "Do you even know who gets invited to this thing, Ella? It’s only for people at the very top. Even if you’re Dr. E, you’re nowhere near that level."

Jessa flashed an invitation in Ella’s face. "See this? It’s my invitation. My dad can’t make it, so I’m here for him. And David’s coming too, obviously."

Sarah crossed her arms. "Ella, you really should leave. You’re way out of your depth here."

Ella’s assistant couldn’t take it anymore. "How dare you talk like—"
