Jessa grabbed Rachel’s shoulders, her voice trembling. “Mom, please, I’m begging you. Just take the fall for me. If you do, I’ll be safe.”
Rachel stared at her daughter, the weight of years pressing down on her. Her whole life had been about clearing a path for Jessa, putting every hope, every dream, on her. She had taught Jessa how to claw her way up, no matter the cost. It was Rachel who told her it was fine to steal Ella’s story and become David’s savior. It was Rachel who told her it was fine to pretend to be the heiress. She had let it all happen.
Now, she was living with the consequences.
The bitterness was overwhelming. Jessa’s selfishness, her ruthlessness, all of it—Rachel had created that. And now, she was the one being cast aside.
“Jessa, I’m your mother. How can you do this to me…” Rachel’s voice broke.
Jessa suddenly dropped to her knees, clutching the leg of Rachel’s pants. “Mom, I don’t have any other choice. I need you to disappear. If you really love me, you’ll help me. Please, I’m begging you.”
Rachel looked at her, pain twisting her face. She let out a shaky, bitter laugh, almost a whisper.
So this was her fate.
Honestly, she should have seen it coming the moment Peter died. Someone had to pay, someone’s blood had to cover up the truth about Jessa’s past. Rachel closed her eyes, letting the silence swallow her up.
…
Ella came back from the hospital, exhausted but relieved. The checkup showed her baby was healthy, but her pregnancy was unstable and needed careful attention.
But Peter was gone. He’d died protecting her, and the whole thing felt strange, like there was more to the story.
She turned to Grandma Jill, whose eyes were swollen and red from crying. “Where’s Rachel?”
Grandma Jill shook her head, her voice hoarse. “I don’t want to hear anything about that woman. She killed my son. I want her to pay for it!”
Just then, Moss walked over. “Ella.”
Ella looked at him, her voice steady. “Rachel was after me. Peter took the blow for me.”
Moss nodded. “I know.”
