Rachel squeezed Jessa’s hands, her eyes shining with hope. Right now, Jessa was all she had to cling to. She truly believed her daughter had come to save her.
Jessa looked at her and softly said, “Mom.”
Rachel pulled her into a tight hug. “Jessa, I’m here. I’m right here.”
Jessa let herself be held. “Mom, Moss is starting to question my identity.”
Rachel froze. “What? Why would he suspect anything about you?”
Jessa’s voice wobbled. “I went to him, Mom. I begged him to let you go. I thought if I pleaded hard enough, he’d listen, but he just wouldn’t. He said you killed someone and he couldn’t let you go. I even got down on my knees, but then he said you were only my adoptive mother, not my real mom. That’s when he started to doubt me.”
Rachel’s heart filled with emotion. “Jessa, I can’t believe you’d do all that for me. I thought you’d given up on me.”
“Mom, don’t say that. Back at the hospital, I only pointed you out because I had no choice. I just wanted to buy us some time. I’d never turn my back on you. But now, not only did I fail to help you, but Mr. Wade is also suspicious of me. Mom, what am I supposed to do?”
Tears streamed down Jessa’s face. “If I lose my place as the richest family’s daughter, the Irvines won’t want me, and neither will the Wades. I’ll have nothing left. I’ve always been better than Ella. If I fall, she’ll walk all over me and make my life miserable. Mom, I can’t live like that.”
“Mom, you’re my real mother. You’ll help me, won’t you? You’re all I have now.”
Her crying was so raw and desperate, anyone would feel sorry for her.
Rachel’s heart broke. “It’s okay, Jessa. I’ll find a way, I promise.”
