If Catherine was really carrying Lance’s child, an heir to the James family, then Geoffrey and his crowd definitely wouldn’t dare mess with her.
“What… What are you even saying?” Adelina felt like she’d just been stabbed with those words. “Are you honestly hoping Catherine gets to climb up as the mistress?”
“Of course not!” Sally didn’t want to get into the Lee family drama with her, so she circled around the topic. “But the truth is, Catherine is in my way now. Especially with her being pregnant.”
Adelina frowned, confused. “In your way? How?”
“It’s just complicated. Trust me, the mess she’s making for me is every bit as bad as the trouble you’ve got because of her.” Sally let out a heavy sigh. “If only you were in Eldervale with me. Maybe we could figure out something together.”
Adelina’s eyes sparkled with an idea and her tone softened. “Sally, I’m not from Eldervale, you know that. Whatever you say to me stays right here—it can’t come back to hurt you. If I know what’s really going on, I might be able to help you deal with it.”
“Fair enough.” Sally didn’t hold back and spilled the whole story. “You know how the Lee family passes everything down to the daughters, not the sons? Actually, Adela had a daughter a while back…”
Adelina usually zoned out whenever people started talking about ancient family feuds, old traditions, or who inherited what. But since it concerned Catherine, she listened closely and felt jealousy twisting deep inside her.
“Sally, if things are really like you say, then it’s not just Catherine who needs to go. That baby can’t stay, either!”
“Exactly. And it’s not just the Lee family who’s keeping an eye on her—she still has Lance. You and Lance are almost married, but he’s still hanging around her. Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if he waited until after the baby is born to come back and marry you. I just can’t find a way to get close to her!”
“He’ll come back the week before our wedding, for sure. He’s already been gone so long, people are starting to talk. Belinda promised she’ll make him come back early to get ready for everything,” Adelina said.
Belinda’s promise was all the reassurance Adelina needed.
“When the time comes, I’ll invite the whole Lee family to the wedding, as a Green. That’ll be your big chance.”
Sally’s heart skipped a beat. “Adelina, you’re amazing. I’ll just wait for your good news, then…”
