“Dr. Harrell, do you know how to deliver babies?” Lorinda leaned in, her curiosity plain on her face. “Are you going to deliver Catherine’s baby?”
Harrell stood up and slid his hands into his pockets. “I don’t do natural deliveries,” he said. “Sometimes I assist with C-sections, but that’s about it. Don’t worry, though. I’ll make sure Catherine gets an experienced doctor for her delivery.”
Lorinda blinked in surprise. “Really? I thought doctors didn’t care about that kind of thing. Why won’t you do it?”
“No special reason.” Harrell’s expression stayed stoic. He clearly wasn’t going to explain.
Lorinda sighed, a little put out, but she pressed on. “Actually, Dr. Harrell, I was hoping you could help me with something else.” She hesitated for a second, then switched gears. “Do you know anyone at The Cabinda Hospital?”
Harrell looked down at her. “What’s this about?”
“I… I’m looking for someone.” Lorinda hesitated, but then just spit it out. “My son was conceived through IVF. His father was a sperm donor at the hospital, and I picked his profile. I was wondering if you could…”
Harrell hadn’t expected that. So that’s how Jasper came into the world. He cut her off before she could finish. “No. The sperm donation department at The Cabinda Hospital is strict for a reason. You shouldn’t be trying to break those rules.”
Lorinda clicked her tongue, frustrated and a little embarrassed. She felt like Harrell was being deliberately difficult. In her mind, every system had its loopholes. No matter how strict the hospital, someone had to know something.
Harrell turned to Catherine instead. “If you have any more questions, just message me on WeChat.”
Catherine glanced at Lorinda, then back at Harrell. “Thank you, Dr. Harrell,” she said quietly.
She slipped her arm through Lorinda’s and led her out of the office. As soon as the door closed behind them, Lorinda tugged at her sleeve and let out a soft scoff. “Honestly, I bet he doesn’t have any real connections. Word is he’s not even that important in the Lane family.”
Catherine lowered her voice. “Didn’t you always say you didn’t want to know who Jasper’s father was?”
Lorinda shrugged. “I did, but Gavin made a good point. What if Jasper’s dad has some huge flaws? I need to be prepared for that.”
