She was still trying to process it all. “Wait, are you sure she actually booked you a room for free?”
Catherine nodded. “Yeah, I’m sure.”
Lorinda rolled her eyes so hard it was a miracle they didn’t get stuck. “I’ve met plenty of nice people, but this is just too much. What, do they have so much money they’re running out of ways to spend it?”
People always say the more money someone has, the stingier they get. If the rich were really that generous, they’d have to help people nonstop. That’s why they keep things quiet, always worried that if they help one person, everyone else will want a piece too.
From what Catherine knew, the Lee family didn’t have the best reputation in Eldervale. They never went out of their way to look charitable or do good deeds. Honestly, it was pretty clear they weren’t the giving type. And those excuses, like maybe they just felt close to her or wanted to make up for Sally’s behavior, didn’t make any sense either.
“Forget it. I turned down the offer anyway. I’m not going to stress about it.”
If she couldn’t figure it out, Catherine would rather just let it go.
Lorinda hopped off the couch and settled in. “Alright, your due date is coming up. No more drama. Let’s just enjoy these last weeks, okay? Grab your stuff. We’re booking that postnatal care center you wanted today.”
They’d argued over which center to pick for days, but in the end, Catherine won. They were going with the one out in the suburbs.
Catherine stood up, grabbed her purse, slipped on her coat, and got in the car with Alexa and Jasper.
While Catherine was putting on her coat, Lorinda sneakily swapped out Catherine’s card from her purse and slid her own card in, tossing Catherine’s aside.
Jasper fell asleep halfway through the drive.
Catherine’s phone buzzed in her hand and she answered quietly.
“Hello, is this Catherine?”
“Yes, speaking.”
