“I think there was a patient like that.”
Harrell kept his face unreadable. “Do you know her?”
Adela nodded. “Do you remember if she’s having a boy or a girl?”
Sally’s head whipped toward Adela. “Mom, what are you talking about?”
“Quiet.” Adela shot Sally a sharp look, then turned back to Harrell.
Harrell paused for a few seconds before shaking his head. “I see so many patients. I remember her, but I don’t recall the details.”
Adela lowered her voice. “When’s her next appointment?”
“Should be soon. Late pregnancy means more frequent check-ups.”
“When she comes in next, I want you to find out if it’s a boy.”
Adela pulled out a check and tucked it into Harrell’s bag. “Let me know right away.”
“Adela.”
Harrell’s expression was serious. “I have my own morals.”
He took the check out and held it out to her. “I’ll forget what happened today, but I can’t do anything else for you.”
“It’s too late.” Adela didn’t take the check back. “I recorded everything you just said. There’s no turning back. Whether your career ends here or not is up to you.”
He could take the money and do what Adela wanted, going against his conscience.
Or he could do the right thing, but risk losing everything and being forced out of the medical field.
Anyone with sense would know which way to go.
Adela didn’t care if Harrell was happy about helping her. Now that she had something over him, she could rest easy.
Harrell stood frozen. Sally got up, tidying her clothes, her gaze locked on the check in Harrell’s hand, practically fuming.
In the end, Harrell slipped the check back into his bag.
“I’ll wait for your news.”
