The mother and daughter both fell to their knees before the matriarch.
“Grandma, I didn’t mean to kill her,” Ann cried. “Laurel attacked me first. Please, save me, Grandma. I don’t want to go to jail!”
The matriarch’s eyes filled with pity. “Ann, listen to Grandma. Turn yourself in. Once you’re in, I’ll use my connections to get you out as early as possible.”
“No!”
Ann’s eyes widened, bulging frighteningly. “If I go to prison, my whole life will be ruined!”
Selene chimed in, “Matriarch, Ann is your youngest son’s only child. She can’t go to prison!”
The matriarch tried to reason with Ann. “Ann, if you behave and reform yourself in there, Grandma will leave you a trust fund. No matter when you get out, you’ll never have to worry about making a living.”
Hearing that the matriarch had prepared money for her, Ann grew excited.
She grasped the matriarch’s hand. “Grandma, why don’t you just give me the money now? I’ll disappear far away and never cause you trouble again!”
Seeing how obstinate Ann was, the matriarch angrily shook her hand off.
“I used to think you were just a child who had suffered too much and that’s why you did those foolish things,” the matriarch scolded. “But now I see you’re just purely evil. You killed someone and you’re still trying to escape justice. You’re completely unrepentant!”
Ann descended into a state of frenzy. “There it is again! That same condescending, preachy tone!”
She struggled to her feet and pointed a finger at the matriarch, her teeth gritted. “Every single one of you looks down on me. Anyone feels like they can lecture me. What do you all take me for?”
“You!” The matriarch pointed back, her hand trembling with rage.
Ann slapped the matriarch’s hand away. “You old hag! If I hadn’t given you a kidney, would you even be alive right now?”
