Enraged and humiliated, Hamlin unleashed his fury on Selene, whipping her with the belt.
He only stopped when she passed out from the pain.
“Lock this bitch in the storage room,” Hamlin ordered a servant. “No one is to open the door without my command!”
—
That night, a maid secretly unlocked the storage room door and let Selene out. “Mr. Quinn isn’t coming home tonight. You should leave quickly.”
Selene immediately took off her gold bracelet and gave it to the maid. “Cover for me. I’m just going upstairs to change into some clean clothes, and then I’ll be gone.”
A few minutes later, Selene had emptied Hamlin’s safe of all its gold and cash and fled the Quinn estate.
Before she left, she emptied two packets of rat poison into the slow cooker that was on a timer to make porridge.
After several hours of travel, Selene found Ann hiding in an old, rundown house on the outskirts of Capital City.
When Selene opened a black bag to reveal gold bars and stacks of cash, Ann’s eyes lit up.
“You always have a plan, Mom. I knew fate wouldn’t be so cruel to me.”
Ignoring the searing pain all over her body, Selene urged her, “All the money I secretly made during my years with Hamlin is in an overseas bank. We have to leave tonight. Once we’re abroad, I’ll get you a new identity, and the police will never find you.”
Selene grabbed Ann, ready to leave, but Ann hesitated.
Selene’s overseas account had a few million at most. How long could she live lavishly on that? She was the only remaining heir of the second branch of the Harvest family. She refused to believe they would just abandon her.
Seeing Ann’s hesitation, Selene pleaded, “Ann, you killed Laurel. That’s a capital crime! The police are looking for you everywhere. If we don’t leave now, it’ll be too late!”
Ann shook her head. “Mom, I can’t just leave like this. I’m not willing. I’m the only blood relative of the second branch of the Harvest family. Half of all their assets are mine. As long as the Harvests are willing to pay, I won’t go to prison!”
Selene’s palms began to sweat with anxiety. “Ann, don’t be a fool right now. A servant at the Quinn estate told me the matriarch went to Grace Cathedral early this morning. The Harvest family also held a press conference and disowned you. If you go looking for them now, you’ll be walking right into a trap!”
Grace Cathedral?
A sudden idea struck Ann. “Mom, Grace Cathedral isn’t far from here. Let’s go find the matriarch!”
