Incited by Mrs. Windsor, Laurel and Fiona turned on Selene the moment she approached them.
Laurel pointed a finger at Selene and started shouting, “You bitch, Selene! I slaved away for the James family, and the whole time you were tricking me into raising your daughter, you little tramp!”
Selene’s mind went blank. Her parents and brother were long dead, and the matriarch had promised to keep the secret of her and Ann’s relationship. How could Laurel know?
Snapping back to reality, Selene asked cautiously, “Laurel, what are you talking about? How could Ann possibly be my daughter?”
Fiona, ever the firecracker, shot back, “Aunt, you really played us all for fools, didn't you? Your whole family conned my mother-in-law into raising your daughter while you were out living it up!”
Selene’s heart clenched. “Who’s been feeding you this nonsense? Was it the person in the car just now?”
Both she and Ann had complicated pasts. The matriarch had insisted on hiding their true relationship for Ann’s sake, letting them continue to pose as aunt and niece. Selene, now pregnant with Hamlin’s child, was also terrified of the potential scandal and didn't want to drag Ann down, so she had agreed to Gideon’s arrangement. They had been so careful. Who could have ratted them out? Could the person in the car have been from the Harvest family?
Her mind raced with possibilities.
Laurel pointed at her, her voice dripping with venom. “Don’t think I don’t know. You’re pregnant with some rich guy’s baby, and Ann has been welcomed into the Harvest family. If you don’t compensate me, I swear this isn’t over!”
Selene stubbornly denied it. She pulled out five thousand dollars in cash from her purse and shoved it into Laurel’s hand. “Laurel, we’re family. If I really had money, you think I’d forget about you?”
