“We’ve been searching for you all day without a bite to eat or a drop to drink,” Benton continued. “Jackie’s feet are raw, and you didn’t even bother to call home once. You have no respect for any of us!”
“I’m sorry, Benton,” Ann explained frantically. “I know I was wrong. I promise it won’t happen again!”
On the surface, Ann appeared meek and submissive, but inside, she was gloating. So that was why the Harvests were angry. They might despise her, but when she threw a tantrum and left, they all had to obediently go out and find her.
Gideon, with Fidelia in tow, spoke to Ann with a serious expression. “We’re exhausted after a long day. We won’t be eating. You should go back to your room and reflect on your actions.”
Seeing that no one was willing to grace her dinner with their presence, Ann had no choice but to dejectedly leave.
The moment she was gone, the siblings slipped into their parents’ room.
They threw off their jackets, each revealing hidden stashes of food.
Kenny locked the door behind them.
Jackie opened a bag. “Mom, Dad, come on! Freshly grilled skewers.”
Benton opened his bag. “A bucket of fried chicken, minus one drumstick that Fidelia ate on the way.”
Gideon opened two containers. “The vegetable platter you wanted, with extra cilantro.”
Fidelia pulled two bottles of cola from her pockets. “Mom, Dad, your happy water.”
Gideon's mom glanced at Kenny, who was standing guard. “Watch the door. Don’t let anyone in.”
Kenny nodded dutifully. “Don’t worry, the door’s locked. Eat up.”
And so, the parents feasted at the table in their sitting room.
Kenny stood guard by the door, Benton lounged on the sofa playing a game, Gideon sat lost in thought at his mother’s vanity, while Jackie and Fidelia snacked alongside their parents.
