Gideon and Claudia were standing on the sidewalk by the road.
Gideon reached out to help Claudia with her bags, but she subtly shifted to the side, avoiding his hand.
"It's just a few daily necessities, they're light. I can carry them myself," Claudia said.
Gideon could clearly feel her coldness.
Ever since that night in Caledon, he had been pursuing her.
Although Claudia hadn't said yes, she hadn't been resistant either.
But now, her attitude towards him had clearly cooled. He could sense it.
Anxious, Gideon tried to explain. "A lot of things came up unexpectedly at the family recognition banquet. It was my fault for not taking better care of you."
Claudia countered, "Gideon, do I look like that petty of a person to you?"
Her simple question made Gideon flush with shame.
"I'm sorry," he said, at a loss for what to do.
It was the first time Claudia had ever seen Gideon look so helpless in front of her.
She said to him, "Gideon, I just want to focus on my career. I'm not thinking about my personal life right now."
Gideon tried to keep his tone gentle. "A career and a relationship don't have to be mutually exclusive."
Claudia stood by her decision. "But for me, my future and career are more important than romance."
They looked at each other.
Gideon's gaze was unusually firm as he told her, "But love is much harder to find than a career path."
Claudia lowered her eyes, hiding the emotion within them.
