He turned around, still holding Ann, his eyes fixed on Claudia's retreating figure.

Claudia had been angry and distant lately because of Ann.

But he never imagined she could calmly tell someone else that he and Ann were a married couple.

Ann secretly watched York's reaction. Though his face was calm, she could feel the tension in his body.

"York, York?" Ann called his name several times before he snapped out of it.

After taking Ann back to her room, York was pulled away by Peter.

They stood in the small park behind the hospital.

York lit a cigarette by the small river. "What do you want to say?"

He and Peter had been friends since childhood. If Peter had gone out of his way to get him alone, he clearly had something on his mind.

Peter prefaced his words carefully, "First off, I'm just stating the facts. I'm not taking anyone's side."

York flicked the ash from his cigarette with his well-defined fingers. "Go on."

Peter said seriously, "That night, Ann herself said she came back for you. And that caregiver of hers was even more arrogant than Darleen, threatening to call you and have you kick Darleen out of Capital City."

York glanced at Peter, his complex eyes darkening.

Peter continued, "Darleen is your sister, for God's sake. You can't abandon your own family for outsiders."

York's expression was complicated. "If our elders hadn't interfered back then, I would have married Ann."
