He had given her marriage, status, and material comfort. In return, she had to tolerate his affair. In his eyes, their marriage was a transaction. And if it was a transaction, she had the right to negotiate the terms.
York turned to look at her. "Fine." It would be good for her to have something to do, to keep her from brooding all day.
"I want to move out," Claudia added.
York stopped mid-stride and turned back to face her. "No."
Claudia's voice was firm. "I've loved you for years and been married to you for three. You cheated on me, betrayed me, but you won't let me go. I'm a human being, and my heart hurts. You have to give me time and space to adjust. I need to move out. I need to clear my head." Even if she couldn't afford the divorce now, she had to find a way.
York walked over to her, placed his hands on her shoulders, and pushed her down to sit on the edge of the bed. He perched on the nightstand, staring into her dull, lifeless eyes. "Claudia, the Ferguson Group is a publicly traded company. My marital status is completely public. Our every move affects the company's future."
"As long as we are not divorced," he said, "you must live here."
Claudia retorted, "You talk about the company, but you're not afraid that keeping a mistress will affect it?"
"If any problems arise for the Ferguson Group because of me, I will bear the full responsibility. Can you?"
