Chapter 650

Morning came quietly.

Breakfast passed in a strange silence, not awkward, but not comfortable either. The soft clink of cutlery filled the space, occasionally broken by a quiet breath, but no real conversation followed.

Lydia looked at her plate more often than at Cale. It wasn’t that she lacked appetite-there were simply too many thoughts weighing on her mind, questions she couldn’t ask freely.

Meanwhile, Cale…

seemed completely at ease.

Calm. Controlled. As if there was nothing left to discuss. In fact, he ate with an almost unsettling normalcy.

Until he finally set his utensils down.

“I need to step out for a while.”

Lydia lifted her head, her gaze locking onto him.

That was all-but it was enough to stir a dozen questions in her mind. Where? With whom? For what?

But before any of them could leave her lips, Cale spoke again.

“I’m not going to see Naomi.”

Lydia stepped. Her expression shifted-just slightly. Suspicion. Curiosity.

“Then?”

“A business associate,” Cale answered shortly. “He happens to be in Germany.”

“And you have to meet him now?”

“Yes.”

The answer left no room for discussion.

Lydia exhaled softly. “How long?”

“Not long.” Cale finished his drink in one go before setting the glass down. “Il come find you once I’m done.” “Of course.” The disappointment in Lydia’s voice was subtle-but unmistakable, even if she didn’t say it outright.

Cale glanced at her briefly. “Andrew will stay with you.”

“I don’t need a babysitter.”

“You’ll have one anyway. In Berlin, you don’t know anyone but me. So don’t wander too far out of my reach.”

Lydia gave a faint, sarcastic smile. “You’ve really planned everything, haven’t you?”

“I’m just making sure you’re safe.”

“As always. Worrying about things that don’t need worrying,” Lydia replied, her gaze sharpening with quiet displeasure.

Cale didn’t respond. He stood, straightening his jacket with calm precision before continuing, “Let me know where you are before four. I’ll come pick you up. If possible, we’ll meet at the Pergamon Museum.”

Lydia frowned. “Pergamon Museum?”

“Andrew knows the place.”

“And if I don’t feel like going there?”

Cale looked at her directly. “You’ll still go.”

Silence followed.

And once again-Lydia realized she didn’t really have a choice.

She lowered her gaze for a moment, then gave a small nod. “Alright.”

She didn’t argue further-not because she agreed, but because she knew… it wouldn’t change anything.

Cale stepped closer. His fingers brushed her chin, lifting it slightly. “Don’t make me worry, my love. And I know you won’t cause trouble.”

Lydia gently pushed his hand away. “I’m not a child.”

Cale smiled faintly. Then, without warning, he pressed a brief kiss to her lips-lips that hadn’t curved into a smile for him all morning. He understood exactly why.

“Then prove it.”

That single sentence left Lydia silent-and Cale didn’t wait for her response. He simply turned and walked away, leaving her behind without a second glance. The moment the door closed, Lydia slammed her hand against the dining table. Not hard, but loud enough to break the stillness.

It was an outlet-for the frustration and tension she had been holding in since last night.

There were many things she liked about Cale Miller.

But there were also parts of him she absolutely hated.

This was one of them.

Controlling. Unyielding. Unquestionable.

“Damn it,” Lydia muttered, dragging her hands over her face, frustration tightening in her chest. “I should be used to this by now, shouldn’t I? So why am I so angry this time?”

If not for the message from Andrew-reminding her that he would pick her up in an hour-she might have stayed in, maybe even gone for a swim until the irritation drained out of her system.

And if she hadn’t remembered that Andrew had been arranged by Althea to accompany them during their stay in Berlin, Lydia would have refused to leave the hotel altogether.

“Damn it… damn it… damn it,” she grumbled under her breath.

It didn’t take long before another message came through-Andrew informing her he was already waiting in the lobby. With visible reluctance, Lydia finally left her room.

The moment she reached the lobby, Andrew approached her, his expression as polite and friendly as ever. “Mrs. Miller, have you decided where you’d like to go today?”

Lydia stood still for a few seconds before answering, “Nowhere.”
