Chapter 655

As if asking her to return to him-to the version of her that smiled easily, without the lingering tension from this morning.

No matter what, Cale still cared about how she felt.

“Of course.” Lydia gave a faint smile, slipping her hand into his.

Their fingers intertwined.

Andrew quickly stepped forward, opening the door for them. The car pulled away from the museum smoothly, the quiet hum of the engine blending into the silence inside.

Lydia leaned back in her seat, her gaze drifting to the window, watching Berlin pass by-though she wasn’t really seeing any of

Her thoughts were still in that corridor.

Still with Naomi.

What would happen to her now?

“So,” Cale’s voice broke the silence, light but deliberate, drawing her attention back, “your shopping.”

Lydia glanced at him briefly. “Why?”

“Nothing.” The corner of Cale’s lips lifted slightly. “I just didn’t expect it. It’s not like you.”

“Do you mind?” Lydia asked, her tone flat-but there was a subtle challenge beneath it.

“Not at all,” Cale replied without hesitation.

“Really?”

Cale turned his head, studying her with an expression that was hard to read. “Do you know how long I’ve been waiting for this?”

“For what?”

“For you to take advantage of my position.”

Lydia fell silent for a moment, then let out a soft laugh. “So you enjoy spending that much of your money?”

“Quite a bit. I make more than you could ever spend.”

A small frown creased Lydia’s forehead. “You have a very strange way of thinking.”

“Do you know why?” Cale’s smile lingered. Before Lydia could answer, he continued, “Because it means you’re starting to feel comfortable.”

There was no teasing in his voice.

Just calm certainty. Honesty.

And somehow, that made it harder for Lydia to respond right away. There was a warmth in his words-something steady, something quietly filled with affection in the way he treated her.

It made her feel… happy.

Because of that, Lydia lowered her gaze slightly, hiding the faint smile tugging at her lips-and the soft flush rising to her cheeks.

Silence settled between them again.

But this time, it wasn’t tense.

There was a small opening now-just enough for Lydia to decide she hadn’t planned.

“Cale.”

“Yes?”

She turned to him, hesitant-but she didn’t pull back. “Can I ask you something?”

Cale didn’t answer immediately. He simply looked at her for a moment before saying, “Since when do you ask for permission?”

Lydia let out a small breath. “You know what I mean.”

Cale gave a slight gesture for her to continue.

And because of that, Lydia gathered her courage.

“The Chen family,” she said softly.

Cale’s grip on the steering wheel tightened for a brief second, though he quickly masked it.

“What do you want to know?” he asked at last.

Lydia held his gaze, her voice quieter now.

“What were they like… back then?”

Cale fell silent for a moment, his gaze fixed straight ahead as if gathering something that wasn’t easy to put into words.

“They weren’t the kind of people who trusted easily-or were easily trusted,” he said at last, his voice low.

Lydia frowned slightly. “What do you mean?”

“They came from a powerful background. Structured. Organized. They had a lot of followers-loyal ones. And they never truly played clean, whether in business or in government.”

“That sounds… terrifying,” Lydia admitted quietly. “I hope you stay away from a world like that, Cale.”

Cale gave a faint smile. “I never really could. You know, sometimes the kind of business TnC runs… requires support from people like the Chen family.”

Lydia studied him more closely. “Then why do you care about them?”

Cale turned to her.

This time, his gaze was sharper-deeper. He didn’t need many words; what lingered in his eyes said enough..

Loss.

Grief.

Regret.

“Because they once saved me.”

Silence followed.
