“I missed you too,” she said. “Did you have fun on your trip?”

Freya’s question prompted Nina to immediately hold up her bandaged little arm.

“Me hurt,” she announced seriously, showing off her injured arm.

Freya had already heard the story over the phone, but she didn’t interrupt Nina’s retelling.

She listened attentively, then gently blew on Nina’s arm.

“Sweetie, you need to be more careful next time, okay? Don’t get hurt again,” Freya said. “I bought you some toys. Do you want to go see them?”

Nina’s response was instant. “Yes!”

Freya carried Nina inside, chatting with Amelia about the family situation as they walked.

“Barry’s still in the hospital. Nathan and Lily are with him,” Freya explained. “Mom is at home. She’s been feeling down because of Barry. It’s good you’re here. Having you around will cheer her up.”

“I know. About Barry… I want to go see him,” Amelia said. She was worried about Barry and wanted to visit

him later.

Freya didn’t stop her. She nodded. “I’ll go with you.”

Freya also used the toys to distract her.

Nina had just gotten off a long flight and was now visiting. The adults didn’t want to take her to the hospital.

Hospitals were full of sick people, and they were afraid all the activity might make her sick too.

With toys and Jane to distract her, Nina behaved for a little while. She tattled to Jane about her arm and even played with the toys Freya bought alongside her.

Seeing that Jane and Nina were playing well together, Freya wanted to take Amelia out, leaving Benjamin to watch Nina.

Freya and Amelia tried to sneak out quietly, but the moment they reached the door, a series of rapid little footsteps sounded behind them.

It was Nina, running after them. She held a toy in one hand and used the other to grab Amelia’s hand.

“Mommy, see Barry?”

Amelia looked back at Benjamin, who had walked over.

“She noticed the moment you moved,” he explained. “I tried to block her, but it didn’t work. She told me to

move.”
