I was surprised. “How do you know I’m a restless sleeper?”

I was sure I’d never shared a bed with Tess at night. She shouldn’t have known something like that.

Tess sighed softly. “Mr. Lancaster told me. He also said I should make sure you don’t eat too many sugary fruits and eat more vegetables instead. And that you need to finish all of that bitter tonic, not pour it down the drain. There were many other things, too…”

I was a bit dazed. I knew Steven had been good to me recently, but I hadn’t realized just how closely he’d been watching me.

That tonic tasted awful, and I always drank half and dumped the rest. I thought no one knew, but Steven had noticed.

Tess sighed again. “Ma’am, Mr. Lancaster really cares about you. If my future husband is half as attentive as him, I’ll thank my lucky stars.”

After Tess left, I lay in bed, tossing and turning, unable to sleep. It was strange. Back at the mansion, Steven often worked late and came to bed long after I did. I might not have slept soundly then, but at least I could sleep.

Not like this. Counting sheep, listening to music, even meditating—nothing worked.

Was it because I was in a different bed? But I’d never had trouble sleeping in new places before.

I stared at the ceiling, lost in thought. The night was quiet and cool. I pulled the duvet tighter, missing the warmth of Steven’s arms. No matter the time, he always felt so warm.

Just as I was thinking about him, a piercing alarm shattered the silence. I shot up in bed, my heart pounding.

Uncle Julian lived in one of the most exclusive gated communities in the country. The security was top-notch, with guards patrolling day and night and every house equipped with an alarm system. Any intruder would trigger it immediately.
