Uncle Julian was leaning on a cane, and his steps were slow.
Seeing the way he was limping, my expression changed. “Uncle Julian, what happened to you?”
Uncle Julian waved his hand, signaling that it was nothing.
Ryan leaned in and whispered in my ear, “He was watching a chess game in the park and couldn't resist jumping in. Turns out his opponent was a sore loser, and their war of words quickly turned into a shoving match…”
My curiosity was immediately piqued. “Did Uncle Julian lose?”
Ryan laughed. “As if. Does he look like the type to take a loss? He won, all right. But he got a little too cocky celebrating and twisted his ankle coming down a curb.”
“…”
Right. Uncle Julian really was a kid at heart, so competitive even at his age.
Ryan’s words had barely left his mouth before they earned him a solid thwack from Uncle Julian’s cane. “You little brat, what are you whispering about behind my back?”
Ryan rubbed his calf. “I was just telling my sister about your glorious victory!”
Uncle Julian ignored him and turned to me, his eyes looking a little red.
“You, young lady… How could you not tell the family about something as big as being pregnant!”
I shot a look at Ryan. I had called Uncle Julian just a couple of days ago and told him I'd be ready for him to pick me up in two weeks, but I hadn’t mentioned the pregnancy. It had to be that big-mouthed Ryan.
Ryan avoided my gaze guiltily and helped Uncle Julian inside. “Let’s get you inside first.”
Just then, Steven came out. He gave a slight nod and said respectfully, “Uncle Julian!”
“Don’t call me that.” Uncle Julian held up a hand to stop him, his gaze cold. “I’m Zephyra’s uncle. You two are divorced, so you can call me Mr. Lopez.”
