I must have said the wrong thing, because Steven, flustered and angry, threw me out of the room.
He didn't, however, throw out my pastries.
Steven is so stubborn. I've never met a man who gets angry so easily.
Then again... with my current memory, I haven't met many men at all.
I was in a good mood, so I went downstairs to see if there was anything good to eat. Nothing really appealed to my palate, so I asked the proprietor if I could borrow her kitchen.
She hadn't believed I could cook before, but after trying my pastries, she let me have free rein without a second thought.
In the room.
Steven stared at the pastries for a long time. Finally, he picked up one shaped like a cute little pig and ate it slowly.
In a dim corner of the room, unseen by anyone, the corners of his lips curved into a slight, gentle smile.
But a moment later, the ringing of his phone shattered the silence.
Steven glanced at the caller ID and answered.
Myron's voice came through the phone. "I went to see your grandfather, but you weren't there. I heard you're not at the office either. Everything okay?"
"I'm fine."
"Where are you?"
"Port Caldoria."
"Port Caldoria? What are you doing so far away?" Myron's tone changed, his conclusion immediate. "You found Zephyra, didn't you?"
Steven's eyes darkened for a fleeting moment, but his voice was calm.
"Yes."
Myron was incredulous. "Holy hell... how convenient. Have you checked it out? Are you sure it's real? This isn't some trick, is it? Your company is bigger and stronger than ever, on track to make you one of the richest men in the world. Maybe she regrets going after you. Or maybe she realized she couldn't take you down and is scared of your retaliation, so she's playing dumb to get out of it?"
Steven replied, "That's not the case."
Myron was silent for a long moment, then cursed under his breath.
"The timing of this amnesia is too perfect. Steven, you can't go soft on her. You barely managed to pull one leg out of that quicksand. If you fall back in, you're a dead man!"
"Unless you can guarantee she'll never get her memory back, given how ruthless she is... Steven, she could actually kill you."
Steven listened quietly to Myron, his handsome face impassive. "Mr. Taylor, I was the one who let her go."
Myron fell silent instantly, understanding the implication.
It wasn't about Steven being afraid of retaliation or anything else. It was simply that Steven was choosing to set her free.
"Steven, you... are you trying to be some kind of tragic romantic hero? Whether Zephyra gets her memory back or not, she won't be grateful. To her, it would be better if you never came near her again. But... I can't help but feel you're getting the short end of the stick here. She doesn't deserve your devotion."
