Hudson stood by the bed, looking down at her with an icy stare and an even colder tone.

“You want a divorce? You want a job? You don’t want to be with me anymore? Fine. Starting today, you get nothing from me. No money, no more help for your father’s company. When you can find a job and support yourself, then we can talk about divorce.”

Before leaving, he threw one last remark at her. “Jade, you need more than just a tough attitude. Before you throw another fit, ask yourself: what do you really have to fall back on if we split up?”

Before marriage, Jade had been the sheltered daughter of the Merchant family. After marriage, she became the pampered Mrs. Walter. For over twenty years, she’d lived in a bubble, completely shielded from how tough the real world was.

Hudson knew better than anyone that Jade, raised to be gentle and obedient, had no real grit. Once she faced rejection and hardship out there, she’d realize how cushy the life he provided

was.

She’d come crawling back, head bowed. It was only a matter of time. And when she did, she’d learn, without him saying a word, exactly how to play nice with Amara and her daughter.

“You don’t have to worry,” Jade said, slowly sitting up, her voice firm. “Even if I end up digging through trash or sleeping on the streets, I won’t spend another dime of your money!”

Hudson gave a smirk, but his eyes were cold. “Good. I’ll be waiting. I’m curious to see how long you can keep this up.”

With that, he turned and strode out of the room.

Jade watched him go, then scrambled over, locked the door, and pushed a chair against it for good measure,

Clutching her laptop, she wiped the stubborn tears from her eyes and went back to searching for jobs.

I’m not alone anymore. I have a baby to take care of. I have to be strong. I can’t fall apart.

Mom used to tell me that if I wanted to do something, I should go for it, because she would always be my rock.

Now, I need to become that same rock for my own child.

Her phone rang sharply.

Jade picked it up.

“Dad…”

Michael began with a heavy sigh, instantly weighing down the conversation.

“What’s wrong?” Jade asked.

“Jade,” Michael started, “I’ve been thinking these past few days. Agreeing to your divorce from Hudson was too hasty. Couples fight. They make up. Who doesn’t argue? Marriage isn’t a game. Talking about divorce all the time ruins even the best relationship. You’ve always been such a good, understanding girl. Just be patient. This will all blow over.”

Good and understanding-these were the principles Michael always pushed on her at home.

Hudson wanted the same thing-for her to be good, to silently accept everything about Amara and her daughter.

Just like with Robert. Just like with Amara and her daughter. Both Michael and Hudson wanted her to be compliant. Only then would they bother being kind to her.

The moment she stopped toeing the line, everything they gave her would be snatched away.

The harsh words she’d overheard at the villa door a few days ago came flooding back. She gripped the phone so tightly her knuckles turned white,

“Why?” she whispered.

“Why what?” Michael asked.

“I’m not the one in the wrong. Why do I have to be the one to put up with it?” Jade’s voice broke, Tears fell, soaking dark patches into the pale bedsheet.

“Hudson brought another woman into our home! Am I supposed to just accept that? Tell me, how long am I supposed to endure it?”

Michael was completely taken aback. This wasn’t the reaction he’d expected. He was at a loss. “Ahem… I have a business trip out of town for the next few days. We’ll talk when I get back.”

The line went dead.

Jade stared blankly at her phone. Her hand fell limply onto the pillow. Her eyes were empty, numb.

She knew the “business trip” was just an excuse. Michael didn’t want her coming to see him.
