“Jade is the one upset. It has nothing to do with you or Cortney. Don’t always blame yourself.”

Hudson pulled out a tissue. Amara took the chance to lean into his chest, letting him wipe her

tears.

“Hudson, I’m glad you’re reasonable. Otherwise… otherwise, I can’t imagine what kind of life Cortney and I would live here…”

Hudson gently wiped her tears with one hand and patted her back in comfort with the other. “Relax. I’ll talk to Jade. She should at least apologize to you and Cortney.”

Amara forced a strained smile. “Hudson, you’ve been busy at the office all day. Coming home and dealing with Ms. Merchant’s issues with us… that’s too much for you.”

“It’s fine,” Hudson said. “I brought you here to stay, and you ended up upset. Don’t worry, I’ll handle it. You’ll get an apology.”

In her room, Jade was on her laptop, editing her resume, adding the reason for the three-year employment gap after graduation.

The door opened. She jumped-she was sure she’d locked it.

Before she could react, her laptop was taken.

“Hudson!” Jade reached for it, “Give that back.”

Hudson pressed a hand on her shoulder, holding the laptop high. He saw the job application webpage. A frown creased his brow.

“You’re looking for a job? Jade, can you stop with all this nonsense?”

“That’s not your business,” Jade said, batting his hand away and standing to grab the laptop.

Hudson snapped the laptop shut, grabbed her wrists, and pushed her back onto the bed. His deep eyes bore into hers. “We’ll talk about that later. First, let’s talk about Cortney and Amara. Jade, Cortney is just a little girl. When did you get so petty that you’d pick on a child?”

Jade stayed silent, just staring back at him.

Hudson leaned in. “Jade, I always thought you were understanding. I let Amara and her

daughter stay, hoping you’d be kind to them. But they’ve only been here a few days, and you’re already treating them like this. You-”

“I’m good-natured, but I’m not stupid!” Jade shoved Hudson away. “Amara is perfectly capable. What does she need me to do for her?”

She backed away, not letting him near. “First, you deny I’m Mrs. Walter right in front of her. Now you want me to look after them. Are you trying to make me their personal maid?”

Jade’s chest, calm a moment ago, was heaving with anger. “Hudson, don’t push it. If you can’t stand the sight of me, just sign the divorce papers. I’ll get out of your way!”

Hudson suddenly reached out and gripped her chin. The pain made her gasp, tears welling in her eyes. “Jade, I know you don’t want a divorce. You don’t have to test me with these tantrums. No matter how many times you try, the result is the same. Cortney’s father saved my life. I wouldn’t be here without him. No matter what, I won’t abandon them.”

“I never tried to stop you from helping them!” Jade’s emotions exploded. She grabbed Hudson’s collar, her eyes wet with tears.

“But if ‘helping them’ means lying to me about working late, then turning around to go shopping with them… if it means letting her change everything in this house, even giving away. the room I set aside for a nursery to turn into her daughter’s room… then I can’t accept it, Hudson!”
