Jade said, “I know I don’t have much work experience yet, but I can do more market research to make up for it, and I can-”
The interviewer cut her off gently, “I’m sorry, Ms. Merchant.”

Jade walked out of the lobby and sat on a nearby park bench. She bowed her head, a shadow of dejection settling over her.
But she didn’t let it crush her for long. She pulled herself together. Sure, the rejection stung, but it wasn’t the end. She’d sent out lots of resumes. Many companies hadn’t replied yet. She just had to wait. Something suitable might still come up.
Thinking this, she pulled out her phone and checked for new messages. Seeing nothing, she put it away, got in her car, and drove back to the villa.
The moment she stepped inside, she heard laughter and chatter from the living room. Her eyes dimmed. Ignoring the grating sounds, she headed straight for the stairs.
“Ms. Merchant!” Cortney ran over and hugged her leg. “Mr. Walter says you make amazing desserts! Can you make some for me?”
From the sofa, Amara offered a half-hearted scold. “Cortney, don’t be silly. Come back here.”
Despite her words, she made no move to get up or stop her daughter.
Hudson looked at Jade, his tone a flat command. “Jade, Cortney’s been here a while. She rarely asks for anything. Just do this for her.”
In Hudson’s view, Jade was good-natured and gentle. In her free time, she used to volunteer at an orphanage. She clearly liked kids.
Cortney was cute and clever. Jade wouldn’t have the heart to say no.
This idea had actually been Amara’s. She wanted to improve the relationship between them and Jade. Hudson thought it was a fine idea and had gone along with it.
When Jade didn’t answer, Cortney hugged her leg tighter, bouncing and tugging. “Please, Ms. Merchant! I really want to try your desserts! Please make some!”
Amara chimed in, “Yes, Ms. Merchant. Cortney so rarely wants something. You should indulge

her.”
Everyone was demanding something from Jade. No one saw the weariness on her face. Not that she expected them to.
She stood still for a few seconds. Then she peeled Cortney off her leg and nudged the girl aside. Her gaze swept over Hudson and Amara, her face blank.
“If you want dessert, order it or hire a pastry chef. I’m not your maid. I’m not catering to your unreasonable requests.”
Her cold eyes then fixed on Amara. “Besides, Ms. Hoyt, you’re Cortney’s mother. Wouldn’t it be more meaningful if you made dessert for your own daughter to show your love? Why trouble an outsider like me?”
Amara’s face flushed, then paled at Jade’s words.
Hudson frowned, his voice cold. “Jade, it’s just a dessert. Was that harsh tone really necessary?”
“Yes. It was,” Jade said, her face numb, too tired to argue. “So why don’t you, the world’s best Mr. Walter, make her a dessert yourself?”
Without waiting to see his reaction, she turned and went upstairs.
Hudson’s face darkened. Amara and Cortney, both with red-rimmed eyes, moved closer to him.
“Mr. Walter,” Cortney said, clinging to his arm, her voice sad. “Does Ms. Merchant not like me?”
