Jewell said, “Jade, if you’re feeling down, come find me-or just call or video chat. I’m here for you, always.”

Jade’s heart had felt totally cold all day, but now it warmed up a little. Her nose tingled too. “Okay.”

Night fell. Jade, exhausted from the day, was fast asleep, her hands tucked under her cheek.

The locked guest room door was quietly opened.

The room was dark. A tall figure slipped inside, footsteps nearly soundless on the floor.

The figure stood by the bed for a long moment, watching the sleeping Jade. Then it slid under the covers, pulled her close, and wrapped an arm around her.

Almost immediately, Jade in his arms wrinkled her nose, as if she’d smelled something unpleasant. Then she rolled toward the wall, preferring the cold plaster to the warm body behind her.

Hudson’s expression stiffened. He tightened his hold, pulling her firmly against his chest, and buried his face in the crook of her neck.

Jade had a lovely scent-light, warm, soothing. Just breathing it in eased the tension that had gripped him all day and lessened the throbbing in his temples.

Holding her soft warmth, Hudson closed his eyes.

Jade woke up feeling like she’d been run over. In her dream, she’d been trapped in a vise, unable to move, forced to sleep in one position. It was awful.

She sat up, rubbed her aching back, and waited for the soreness to fade before getting up to wash her face.

she had an interview lined up. It was faster than she’d dared hope.

Tamping down her excitement, she checked the time and place.

The interview was at nine. It was after seven now, and the company was pretty far away. She needed to get ready, or she’d be late.

Jade went back into the bathroom, applied light makeup, picked out a simple black pantsuit from the closet, and pulled her hair into a high ponytail.

After checking herself in the mirror-she looked professional and put-together-she grabbed her bag and headed downstairs.

In the living room, she glanced around quickly.

Good. Hudson, Amara, and the girl are nowhere to be seen.

She didn’t have time for any unnecessary drama today.

Jade ate the breakfast Rosa had left for her, then drove straight to the interview.

Half an hour later, Jade arrived at the interview location. It was 8:30. She had thirty minutes to

prepare.

There were about ten other candidates. The competition was stiff, instantly putting Jade on high alert.

She went over her notes again and again, rehearsing answers in her head, determined not to

mess up.

This was her first real job interview. She valued the chance but was terrified of blowing it. Her stomach was in knots.

Time passed quickly. Soon, it was her turn,

Jade took a deep breath, tucked her notes into her bag, straightened her shoulders, and walked into the interview room with a professional smile.

Facing her were three interviewers-one man, two women. They took turns asking questions.
