Her hostility toward Jade deepened until she ignored all common sense, marching over to grab Jade’s arm to force her out.

“You obviously snuck in while he wasn’t looking! Get out right now, or I’m calling security to have you arrested!”

Jade knit her brows and shook her hand off; Lilian stumbled, nearly face-planting on the hardwood. Recovering her balance, the girl glared at Jade with a murderous intensity.

“You-”

Jade cut her off. “If Howell doesn’t allow guests, why exactly are you standing here?”

Lilian’s eyes flickered with a sudden, guilty panic; her face told the whole story. She didn’t dare admit she had nagged her father into a meeting just so she could slip away and surprise

Bastian.

She’d wanted to be the surprise; finding another woman in the room was a nightmare come to life.

The panic quickly transformed back into a self-righteous arrogance.

“Howell and I are childhood friends! I have status that you could never dream of!”

Perhaps scarred by her history with Hudson and Amara, Jade felt a visceral wave of disgust at the phrase “childhood friends.”

To her, those words were a code for a toxic entitlement that excused any behavior.

Her frown deepened, but she didn’t miss the flicker of doubt in Lilian’s eyes.

“If you’re so sure I don’t belong here, go ahead-call security. Let’s see who they drag out.”

“Don’t you dare play games with me!” Lilian hissed, knowing she didn’t have the authority to call the guards.

But a lifetime of being spoiled meant she couldn’t tolerate a single obstacle in her path.

Especially regarding Bastian, whom she had viewed as her own property for as long as she could remember.

Now, her only goal was to erase the woman who dared to stand in the space she wanted to

Occupy.

Jade asked simply, “Who is really playing games here?”

Lilian ignored the question, grabbing Jade’s shoulder and trying to shove her toward the hallway.

“Get out! You’re a nobody! Get the hell out of my Howell’s office!”

The lack of basic manners was staggering.

Jade took the shove, her expression going stone-cold as she wrenched Lilian’s hand away. She stepped back, only to collide with a solid, unmoving chest.

Firm hands caught her shoulders; Jade looked up to see Bastian’s worried blue-gray eyes.

“Are you hurt?”

“I’m fine.” Jade shook her head.

Bastian checked her over once more to be sure, then turned his gaze toward Lilian.

The contrast was terrifying; the tenderness he had for Jade was replaced by a gaze as sharp and cold as a winter blade.

“Who gave you permission to enter this room?”

Lilian flinched, her body beginning to tremble under his stare. Seeing Jade sheltered in his arms, her eyes filled with tears of pure, humiliated rage.

She pointed a shaking finger at Jade, trying to turn the tables.

“Why is she allowed here when I’m not? Howell, I’m your—”

“You aren’t even a consideration compared to her,” Bastian said, his voice a chilling rasp. He called the guards,

“Take her away. From this moment on, no one enters this floor without my direct authorization. No exceptions.”

The two guards obeyed instantly, each seizing one of Lilian’s shoulders.

Lilian began to wail, struggling against their grip.

“Howell! You can’t do this! Our families have business! My father… my father will be furious!”

Bastian let out a short, jagged laugh of pure derision.

“I’ll be calling your father personally this afternoon. If I ever see you in this building again, our partnership is terminated.”

Lilian went silent with shock, staring at Jade as if she were a ghost.

Before she could find her voice, she was bodily removed from the office and led away.

Downstairs, she was shoved through the main doors, nearly falling onto the sidewalk again.

Recovering her dignity with a snarl of fury, she pulled her phone and dialed Bastian’s mother.

“Mrs. Hamlet…”

Upstairs, in the office.

Jade sat on the sofa, watching Bastian set the lunch containers on the table.

Recalling his absolute dismissal of Lilian, she couldn’t help but ask.

“Wasn’t she a childhood friend? Treating her like that… won’t it cause problems for you?”

Bastian knit his brows. “Growing up together doesn’t give someone the right to cross my boundaries or insult my guests.”

He paused, his gaze locking onto Jade’s for a fleeting second before he looked

away.

“And I only have one exception in my life.”

Jade understood the implication; she felt her ears begin to burn and looked away.

For a moment, she had instinctively compared Bastian to Hudson Walter.

She had assumed every man viewed a childhood bond as a weapon to use against their wife.

But Bastian had shown her that a boundary was a choice, not an accident.
