“Check if anything has happened to Jade recently.”

Kevin replied, “Right away, sir.”

Shortly after Hudson returned to the villa, Kevin arrived with the intelligence he’d gathered.

“Just last night, Mrs. Walter was stalked. She called the police, but the cameras in that section were down, and the suspect escaped.”

“Stalked?”

Hudson’s face turned lethal, and his eyes grew cold.

No wonder Jade had reacted with such visceral fear tonight.

She had been targeted by some creep less than twenty-four hours ago.

Thinking of her sensitive, gentle nature-like a skittish rabbit-he could only imagine how terrified she must have been.

She probably hadn’t slept a wink…

Yet when he saw her tonight, she hadn’t breathed a single word of it to him.

That realization left a hollow, unpleasant ache in Hudson’s chest.

It didn’t feel good…

Kevin nodded. “Yes, sir.”

Hudson exhaled a sharp breath, loosening his tic, but the frustration in his gut only intensified.

“Send a team of our best men to watch her. Tell them to stay in the shadows and not to scare her. I want that stalker identified and neutralized.”

Kevin bowed his head.

“Understood.”

Something occurred to Hudson, and his brow furrowed into a deep scowl.

“Are you absolutely certain the files you gave me before were Jade’s complete medical

Kevin answered without a moment of doubt.

“Yes, Mr. Walter. I took them directly from the hospital director’s hands and they were never opened.”

Hudson pressed further.

“And after that? Has anyone been monitoring her follow-up visits?”

Kevin blinked. “You never issued an order for continued surveillance.”

Hudson pinched the bridge of his nose, the pressure in his head building.

“Keep a team on her medical file. I want every single test result and report sent directly to my desk from now on.”

The following day.

Jade caught her flight to Harbor City.

As she stepped out of the terminal toward the taxi stand, a black Rolls-Royce pulled up slowly beside her.

The window slid down, revealing a man with a sharply chiseled, aristocratic profile.

His features were deep-set, and his light brown eyes gave him a striking, international look.

Jade recognized him from the business pages of every major publication.

The powerhouse behind the Foster empire-Julian Foster.

She knew his face and had his contact information, but they had never interacted in a private capacity.

To greet him too familiarly would be a massive social blunder.

Jade took a step back, but the driver immediately hopped out, jogged over to open the door, and took her bags.

“Ms. Merchant, Mr. Burton Foster requested that I pick you up personally. Please, after you.”

So it was Burton’s doing. Jade thanked him, climbed into the back seat, and smoothed the wrinkles of her skirt, sitting as stiffly as a board.

A faint, amused smile played on Julian’s lips as he watched her. He propped his chin in his hand and leaned slightly toward her.

“Ms. Merchant, do I truly look that terrifying?”

Jade subtly shifted away from him, looking at Julian with a serious expression.

“Not at all, Mr. Foster. Why would you say that?”

Noticing that his proximity was making her uncomfortable, Julian quietly returned to his original position.

“Good. You got in without a single glance or a word. I was starting to think my reputation preceded me in a bad way.”

Jade offered a small, nervous laugh.

“I just didn’t want to overstep and annoy you, Mr. Foster.”

Julian arched an eyebrow. He wanted to push the issue, but in the end, he only offered two words.

“You wouldn’t.”

Jade smiled. “In that case, I’ll make sure to greet you properly next time.”

Properly?

Julian’s expression stiffened. He surreptitiously checked his reflection in the glass.

He was young, and certainly didn’t look old.

Why would she think she needed to do that?

Julian wanted to ask, but given their current lack of rapport-and Jade’s obvious sense of boundaries-he decided to drop it.

Forget it. He’d address the age gap once they were more familiar.

The rest of the drive was silent until Julian dropped her at her hotel.

Back at his headquarters, Julian was still fixated on the way she had addressed him. When his
