Chapter 101 A Bitter Mistake
“Ugh-”
:
A pained grunt echoed behind her, but Jade didn’t have time to look back.
She shoved the door open and turned to slam it shut in one frantic motion.
“Jade…”
A familiar voice suddenly cut through her panic.

Jade’s hand froze on the handle. She turned, looking in disbelief at the man leaning against the wall, doubled over in agony.
“Hudson? What the hell are you doing here?”
Inside the apartment.
Jade led Hudson into the bathroom to rinse the pepper spray from his eyes.
She grabbed a clean towel, gently dabbing at the moisture around his eyelids.
“Can you see anything yet?”
Hudson stood half a head taller than her. In the cramped bathroom, the way Jade worked over him made them feel intimately close, as if he were holding her in a loose embrace.
His eyes were still stinging, but the quick rinse had worked; his vision was starting to return.
He looked down, his gaze landing on the soft crown of Jade’s head.
Moving lower, he traced her porcelain-pale skin and the focused intensity in her eyes.
In the flickering light, her dark hair and red lips stood out against her glowing, translucent
skin.
In three years of marriage, this was the first time he had truly looked at her this closely.
His hand moved instinctively, his fingers reaching out to catch a loose strand of her hair and twining it around his fingertip.
Jade was completely oblivious, her heart racing as Hudson remained silent.

She was terrified that she had actually blinded him.
She swallowed hard and waved a hand in front of his face to test his reaction.
“Hudson? Can you see my hand at all?”

Seeing her genuine panic, Hudson’s lips quirked into a ghost of a smile, his voice dropping into a fake, worried tone.
“It’s a blur. Did you do permanent damage to my eyes?”
Jade’s face drained of color instantly. She dropped the towel and grabbed his arm to pull him
out.
“I’m taking you to the hospital right now.”
Hudson allowed her to lead him into the living room before he caught her wrist and held her still.
“I was joking. I can see perfectly fine.”
Jade froze, spinning around to see his calm expression, her eyes welling with frustrated tears.
“How could you lie about that? Do you have any idea how terrified I was?”
Hudson’s smile widened slightly as he placed his hands on her shoulders.
“Jade, you’re worried about me. Deep down, you don’t actually want to-
“If you went blind because of me, I’d be stuck taking care of you. How would I ever get a divorce then? My life is hard enough; why would you scare me like that?” Jade was still reeling from the shock, whispering through her tears as she stood there with her head bowed.
Hudson’s expression turned to stone. He pulled his hands back, his fists clenching at his sides.
Jade didn’t notice the change in him, sniffing as she tried to shove her fear down.
“Maybe we should go to the clinic anyway. I’m really worried about your vision.”
Hudson was left speechless.
He realized then that her concern wasn’t for him, but for the burden he would become-and the delay it would cause her divorce.
“No need,” Hudson said, his voice turning cold and rigid with irritation.

“I’m not blind. I can see.”
“Good…”
Jade pressed a hand to her chest, letting out a jagged sigh of relief.
“It’s late. You should get going.”

She didn’t even bother to ask why he had shown up, showing a total lack of interest in his
presence.
Realizing this made Hudson’s throat tighten with an unidentifiable ache.
He wanted to say something, but his gaze swept the room and landed on the suitcase in the
corner.
“You’re still going to Harbor City?”
“Yes.”
Jade answered shortly, then her heart skipped a beat as she noticed the baby clothes on the sofa-she’d left them there when she rushed to help him.
She tried to walk over casually to hide them, but Hudson suddenly wrapped his arms around her from behind.
His broad chest pressed against her back, the heat of him making her pulse skyrocket as she fumbled at his arms.
“Hudson…”
“Jade.” Hudson held her in a vice-like grip, burying his face against her neck.
