Years ago, Jade only managed to wedge herself into Hudson’s life through pure, thick-skinned persistence. Aside from that face, she was nothing compared to her.
Amara’s fists clenched at her sides, her eyes flashing with a lethal intent.
It seemed it was time to play her final, devastating trump card.
No matter the cost, she would not let this insignificant bitch steal the life she was owed!
Early morning.
Jade was in the kitchen preparing breakfast when her phone rang; it was John.
“Jade, I’ve officially discussed the divorce with Hudson. He claims he’ll consider the terms. We’ve agreed on a one-week deadline. If he hasn’t signed by then, I will use my authority as patriarch to dissolve the marriage personally.”
Jade froze, the spatula mid-air. She turned off the stove, her heart racing with an uncontrollable surge of joy.
“He… he actually agreed to consider it?”
John’s voice was steady. “He did.”
A brilliant light sparked in Jade’s almond eyes as she touched her stomach, her lips curving into a genuine smile.
“Grandpa John, I can’t thank you enough. You’ve given me my life back.”
The old man seemed to catch her excitement, a faint chuckle in his own voice.
“Does leaving my grandson truly make you that happy, child?”
“It does,” Jade said, her voice dropping into a more serious, honest tone.
“Things have turned so poisonous. Forcing this marriage would just be more pain for everyone. Ending it is the only way for me to breathe again.”
John let out a soft, understanding sigh.

Jade spent a few more minutes chatting with the old man, feeling a massive sense of relief.
Knowing his condition had stabilized allowed the last of her guilt to evaporate.
One week. That was all that stood between her and freedom.
She was heading to Harbor City tomorrow for the restoration project. By the time the work was finished, the deadline would be up.
She wouldn’t have to see Hudson, wouldn’t have to fight him. She’d return to a finalized divorce. It was perfect.
Jade’s mood was radiant; compared to the endless, dark tunnel she had been living in, seven days felt like a blink of an eye.
After her meal, she felt a rare burst of energy and decided to visit the shopping center near her new apartment.
She picked up some basics, and as she wandered through the aisles, she found herself in the infant department.
She stood frozen for a moment, looking at the rows of bottles, tiny wooden bowls, and incredibly soft, miniature clothing.
Jade reached out to touch a tiny sleeve, her mind wandering to the day the baby would finally be here. A tender, motherly smile warmed her face.
A soft, chubby little baby in a pink onesie… the thought was almost too much for her heart to hold.
A sales associate approached her with a professional smile.
“Are you looking for newborn items today, ma’am? How far along are you?”
Jade touched her stomach, a shy, glowing smile lighting up her face.
“He… or she… isn’t here yet.”
The associate nodded warmly, pointing to a curated display.
“These are our premium organic cotton lines. They’re designed specifically for a newborn’s sensitive skin.”

She did another lap of the store, but her feet inevitably led her back to the baby clothes.
She was torn; was it too early to be buying things? What if she was jinxing her newfound peace?
But the tiny outfits were so irresistibly sweet that she couldn’t walk away empty-handed.
In the end, she couldn’t resist and purchased two complete newborn sets.
The baby couldn’t use them yet, but having them made the future feel more real, more tangible.
On her darkest days, she could look at these tiny clothes and remember what she was fighting for.
She was already winning; the baby was already her silent, invisible support system.
After leaving the mall and stowing her purchases, Anthony called, asking her to swing by the studio to grab the specialized tools for the Harbor City trip.
She agreed and steered her car toward the office.
When she arrived, two other members of the restoration team were still finishing their preparations.
She gathered her gear, solved a minor technical issue for them, and finally headed back home as the sun was setting.
Thanks to her intervention, the streetlights and cameras had been repaired that morning. As she walked the alley, it was bathed in light.
The warm, golden glow made the walk feel significantly safer than the night before.
Clutching her bags, Jade took the elevator to her floor and stepped out into the corridor.
