From Ashes of Scandals to His Embrace novel Chapter 268

His relationship with Locke was anything but ordinary. Growing up, Locke had always been there for him, offering care and support. He felt like a big brother, sometimes even a father, and always a mentor and true friend. Honestly, Locke was one of the most important people in his life.

“That’s more like it,” Locke finally said, his stern look easing into something warmer. “Dad called me first thing this morning. He said you brought a girl home to see him and Mom. He was practically bragging, like he wanted me to know he’s more important to you than I am.”

Abigail stared at Locke, totally at a loss for words. Who would have guessed both Locke and Felix were this childish? Competing over who mattered more—seriously?

Adolphus wasn’t about to fall for it. He knew exactly what Locke was up to, trying to nudge him into bringing Laurinda over for dinner. But Laurinda hated those kinds of things, and there was no way he’d drag her into it without asking.

When Adolphus didn’t answer, Locke’s frustration bubbled up again. “Hey, I’m talking to you! At least say something.”

“I can’t decide things for her. If you want, ask her yourself.” Adolphus gave him a small, smug smile.

Locke and Abigail stared at him, caught off guard. Was this really Adolphus? He seemed so much more alive right now.

Suddenly, someone in the crowd whispered, “There’s trouble by the bathrooms. Some rich girl actually tried to start something with the Charles family. Doesn’t she know that’s Adah’s sister?”

“Yeah, and did you see her outfit? Who wears a puffer coat to a party like this?”
