Damian explained the situation with buying the apartment for Aurora. The house was bought jointly by the five former comrades.
Setting her up with a home meant their duty of care was over, and she would have to support herself. It was a good outcome.
The next day, Isabelle got up early and went to the office.
Damian didn't come in, and his replies to her messages were brief. He didn't come home that night either, so she didn't disturb him further.
Early Saturday, she met with Regina. She had originally arranged to look at furniture with Aurora, but Aurora told her to handle it and even had the apartment key delivered, washing her hands of the whole thing.
Isabelle now understood this hot potato had firmly landed in her lap, so she called Regina.
James drove, while Regina and Isabelle looked through furniture catalogs in the back seat.
"Aurora is a good girl, just very attached to Damian. I was afraid you might mind, but I never expected you to be so thoughtful, helping her pick out furniture," Regina said, sounding somewhat embarrassed. Clearly, the situation bothered her too.
"Regina, what are you talking about? I see her as a little sister," Isabelle said, leaning affectionately against Regina.
After over a decade, she was still as clingy with Regina as ever, a habit she'd never outgrown.
"She's actually a month older than you, so she's hardly your 'little sister,'" Regina teased.
Isabelle just smiled. Well, she certainly looks it.
Regina's mind wasn't on furniture but on their personal affairs. "Damian mentioned the year-end rush is almost over, and he'll have about a month off. Any plans for a wedding?"
A wedding? That seemed rushed. Their relationship had been hurried from the start, and their most frequent communication probably happened in bed. They didn't talk much normally.
"That... seems a bit hasty..." Isabelle blushed.
Regina immediately noticed her shyness, chuckled, and patted her hand. "I'll leave it to you young people."
Later, they visited many custom furniture shops, settled on choices, scheduled measurements, and arranged for the work to begin. With a rush job, the place should be ready by spring.
In the evening, after treating Regina to dinner, Isabelle had James drive her home.
Arriving home, Isabelle found several makeup artists waiting at the door. The bodyguards said Damian had sent them.
Knowing she was attending Ashley's birthday party that night, he had arranged for them to help. Isabelle smiled; this saved her a lot of time.
However, it was a bit awkward. The hickeys from two days ago still showed faintly. Thankfully, the makeup artists were unfazed and expertly covered them.
At eight, Brian came to pick her up.
"Did Ms. Debose invite you too?" Isabelle asked.
"No, she invited Mr. Cross. I'm his stand-in," Brian replied.
"What?" Her heart sank. Why is it always her?
