As if on cue, Leonard leaned in toward Lillian and said coyly, “I might have gotten a little carried away today. You’re not mad at me, are you?”
“I’m not mad. It was their own greed. How could I blame you? Have you been busy all day? Are you tired?” Lillian replied, her big-sister instincts kicking in. She comforted him softly, patting his back as he leaned against her.
Just as Leonard was about to say more, his gaze fell on Ethan.
When their eyes met, Ethan was shocked. He thought he had hidden himself quite well. How had he been discovered? It wasn't fair; he was just enjoying the show.
But since he’d been caught, Ethan stood up obediently.
“Um, Ms. Mercer, want some watermelon?”
Lillian instantly realized Ethan had been hiding and watching them.
She smiled gently. “What’s so interesting about watching us? Mr. Hayes, I happen to have some unfinished work at my factory. Why don’t you go help Miss Bennett out this weekend?”
Ethan froze on the spot.
What? Forced overtime?
This show was not worth the price of admission.
Who knew that Ms. Mercer, who looked so gentle and sweet, was actually this formidable?
“This watermelon is good. Since you’ll be busy, I’ll just eat it,” Leonard said, taking the plate from Ethan’s hands.
Now, Ethan had truly lost everything.
Once they were upstairs, the two of them couldn’t help but burst into laughter.
“We should still give him a few extra vacation days this year. Otherwise, at his age, I’m afraid he’ll never find a wife. The poor guy.” Leonard ultimately had a soft spot for Ethan, mainly because he was always so diligent in his work.
