"The fact that I'm not demanding her life is the greatest mercy I can show her."
Martin's words were harsh and unforgiving, showing no trace of fatherly affection for Lillian. He was even talking about a life for a life. A flash of surprise crossed Sabrina's eyes.
But she quickly concealed it.
Martin was certainly not acting like a father, demanding his own daughter's life. It sounded utterly inhuman.
But wasn't this, in its own way, a victory for her?
For her sake, Martin had come to despise his own daughter so much that he was willing to cast her out and sever all ties.
Sabrina reached out and tugged on Martin's arm, her face a mask of sorrow. "Martin, I know I've always tried to protect Lillian in the past, but this is different.
This was our child, the embodiment of our love, the most precious gift of our lives.
For this baby to come to me at my age... do you have any idea how much I cherished this little life?
And now, I'm suddenly supposed to accept that it's gone. I just can't."
Martin pulled her into his arms. Seeing Sabrina unable to eat or drink, seeing how haggard and broken she looked, he couldn't hear a word of what Bella was saying in Lillian's defense.
Bella opportunely raised her voice. "Mom, what's wrong with you today? Where did my kind mother go? Have you forgotten that Lillian is sick? What do you think will happen to her if she's sent to prison?"
Perhaps Bella's voice was a little too loud, grating on Sabrina's fragile nerves. She suddenly broke down, crying hysterically.
Martin's heart shattered. He turned on Bella. "Bella, can't you be a little more patient with your mother?
