They might be kind for a while, but when something really goes wrong, you'll be the first one they choose to sacrifice.
Lillian had figured that much out while she was in prison.
So after her release, her magnified disappointment only made her more resolute and clear-headed.
She had long ago stopped expecting her father and brothers to act with any decency.
Today was no different.
From the very beginning, not a single person had suggested investigating the truth. All fingers had pointed directly at her.
The surrounding guests were pointing and whispering, their murmurs a constant buzz.
Someone did, however, walk up to Martin's side and murmur, "Sir."
Martin turned to see Sebastian.
"Shouldn't this be investigated properly?" Sebastian suggested. "Let's get Mrs. Mercer to a doctor first, and then we can decide what to do…"
Martin gave Sebastian a long, hard look, but his eyes quickly scanned the crowd.
He had already made his declaration in front of so many people. If he backed down now, wouldn't it be… inappropriate?
Martin gritted his teeth. "Sebastian, this is a family matter. You've seen how Lillian has been behaving lately."
"She has no skills whatsoever and only knows how to cause trouble for the family."
"She insisted on starting her own company, and we didn't object or restrain her. And now look, her company is failing…"
When Martin said this, Victor's eyes shot wide open as he looked at Lillian.
Lillian saw his surprise and shot him a fierce look, silencing the impulse to speak.
