Lillian's patience wore thin. "Speak!"
"Well... Ms. Mercer, about that... without confirmation from the parties involved, how could I dare say anything? It was only because Mr. Blake brought it up today that I even mentioned it. Whether it's true or not ultimately depends on Mr. Blake's confirmation."
Lillian stared at Ethan. After she signed the divorce papers, she had left the rest of the process to Sebastian. Since the agreement stated she was giving up all marital assets and custody of their child, there was no need for her to follow up.
She had assumed she would at least need to go in person to finalize the divorce certificate, but she never expected Sebastian to move so quickly.
It was as if he was afraid she'd change her mind if she knew anything, so he rushed to get it done.
Lillian let out a sudden, mocking laugh.
"I was worried the divorce wouldn't go so smoothly. This is good. His eagerness to get divorced has set me free. Still, you're supposed to be on my side, aren't you? You heard news this big and didn't tell me? Ethan, I never realized you had it in you to be so discreet."
At that, Ethan panicked and waved his hands. "No, no, Ms. Mercer! It wasn't confirmed by the parties involved, so I wasn't sure if the news was true. I didn't want to bother you. You're always so busy and you need to take care of your health. I didn't dare disturb you."
"Alright, spare me the excuses. Does Leonard know?"
Ethan scratched his head. "The young master... I think he heard something."
Feeling like he was sitting on pins and needles, Ethan quickly stood up after answering. "Um... Ms. Mercer, it's really busy at the office today. I have to get going, or Victor will start complaining."
With that, Ethan hurried away.
How could Lillian not see what was happening?
He didn't dare say more and used an excuse to run.
It seemed the divorce had been final for some time, and Ethan had known for a while. He fled because he was afraid she would keep questioning him.
It appeared Leonard also knew all along.
Why didn't any of them tell her?
A divorce was one of life's great joyous occasions.
Lillian thought to herself that, regardless, it was something worth celebrating.
Years ago, she had thrown herself headfirst into love, gilding Sebastian with her adoration, viewing him through a thick lens of self-delusion, believing he was the man of her life.
But looking back now, she saw that Sebastian did have his merits. For years, he had coldly pursued his goal of returning to high society, step by step, and ultimately succeeded. She should have woken up and re-evaluated her choices long ago. Unfortunately, she had wasted so many years.
