Jason always paid Mrs. Alvarez’s salary on time every month, depositing it directly into her account. Emma had never asked how much she made. The money she’d just given her was just a small token of her appreciation for all the years of care.

By the time she returned to the living room, the sound of the front door opening echoed from the entryway. Evan was home.

Seeing him, Mrs. Alvarez immediately began to set the table for dinner.

There were several dishes and a soup, all simple, home-cooked meals that Emma loved.

At the dinner table, Evan was as attentive as he had been the past few days, serving her soup and carefully picking the meat off the bones before placing it on her plate.

Emma stared at the heaping portion of chicken in her bowl, a heavy feeling settling in her stomach.

When Evan moved to add more, she quickly pulled her bowl away. “That’s enough, really. I can’t eat that much.”

She ate the chicken in tiny bites, afraid to have too much. Any more than a little, and she felt a wave of nausea. It was the same with the soup; she had to skim all the fat off the top before she could manage a few sips.

“You eat so little. How are you not wasting away?” Evan said disapprovingly, his eyes fixed on her increasingly thin wrists.

Emma pressed her lips together. “I really can’t eat much. My stomach gets upset if I do.”

Seeing that she truly couldn’t eat any more, Evan took her half-finished bowl of meat and polished it off in a few bites. After dinner, he specifically instructed Mrs. Alvarez to wash plenty of Emma’s favorite fruits for her before heading upstairs.

Watching Evan disappear into the study, Mrs. Alvarez chuckled softly. “Ma’am, look at the mister. He’s so worried you’re not getting enough to eat. He’s more attentive than anyone at the dinner table.”

Emma just smiled in response to the lighthearted teasing, saying nothing more.
